The Youth Leadership Summit (July 26-27) will provide a platform for high school leaders in Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland area to reflect on the significance of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history, share emerging trends in AAPI communities, and develop concrete strategies to promote civic engagement. The event will start off at meeting space provided by the American Federation of Teachers at 555 New Jersey Avenue NW. In the afternoon, the attendees will be escorted to the Senate Dirksen Office Building for meetings and activities. On Friday, the Summit will be held at the Service Employees International Unions in Dupont Circle. A full schedule and instructions will be provided upon registration.
During the two-day Summit, students will have the opportunity to learn how the unique experience of Asian America has become an integral part of the American experience. They will explore how the term "Asian American and Pacific Islander" as a political identity remains vital in our country. Students will also discuss the growth of the AAPI electorate and its impact on American politics. Moreover, through discussion groups, workshops, and potential fieldwork opportunities, students will learn how to organize voter registration drives and leverage their resources to create social change within AAPI communities.
