On February 5, 2012, Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote – Michigan quickly expressed deep disappointment with Pete Hoekstra’s “Debbie-spend-it-now” campaign ad, which played on harmful stereotypes of Asians speaking broken English and has stereotypical Chinese music playing in the background. It is very disturbing that Mr. Hoekstra’s campaign chose to use harmful and negative stereotypes that intrinsically encourage anti-Asian sentiment.

Held every 10 years, the Census is a nationwide head count of every person living in the United States. During the last two censuses, the Census Bureau missed counting millions of people – mostly minorities and low-income communities. Undercounting certain populations may reduce federal funding for hospitals, education, child-care, disaster preparation – as well as fair representation in Congress.

APIAVote is now accepting applications for interns in the Washington, D.C. office. The APIAVote Internship Program strives to encourage and cultivate young AAPI student leaders to explore a career in the public sector or the political arena. This internship program will also provide hands on experience and training on how to organize and implement civic engagement activities to increase the participation of AAPIs in the electoral process.
