APIAVote Partners' Meeting Strengthens APIAVote Partner Field Work in 12 States, Including Key Swing States and AAPI-Heavy States

Meeting in Nevada Facilitated Learning of Field & Evaluation Strategies Crucial for Getting out the AAPI Vote in 12 States

Las Vegas, NV--Over 20 participants representing over 12 different states gathered in Nevada this past weekend to participate in APIAVote's Partners' Meeting, a boot camp emphasizing strong and voter mobilization plans and accompanying evaluation metrics.

APIAVote core and affiliate partners are already conducting voter education, registration, and mobilization activities throughout at least 12 states. These states include  battleground states, such as Washington, Pennsylvania, and Nevada, and AAPI-heavy states, such as California and New York, where AAPI voters can be the key difference in local, state, and national races.

During the day-and-a-half long training, participants learned the basics of evaluation tools and brainstormed on ideas to incorporate them into their existing voter mobilization plan. In addition, they were able to consult with APIAVote staff members and consultants on hand to discuss field strategies, communications planning, and evaluation tools.

"The weekend provided much-needed training for our fall GOTV efforts in Philadelphia. Now that I have a field plan, I feel more confident that we will reach our voter registration and voter engagement goals. Connecting with GOTV leaders from across the country provides a valuable support network as we head into the fall," said Michelle Wong of APIAVote-Pennsylvania.

"The event was very helpful for Viet-Vote. I hope to keep this line of communication open as we continue to push forward in our efforts towards building a stronger voice for the Vietnamese community in Boston," said Thu Nguyen, of the Viet-Vote coalition in Boston, Massachusetts.

"The emphasis of this training was on a strategic and realistic voter mobilization plan that can be fully implemented and evaluated with the limited resources we know many of our organizations are operating with," said Kathleen Tapacio-Flores, national campaign director of APIAVote.

A surprise visit by U.S. Ambassador Sichan Siv further encouraged participants, as appropriate to the occasion, he briefly spoke of the importance of living the American dream through civic participation.

APIAVote Announces Hiring of Field & Communications Staff

Additional Staff Signifies Stability & Growth for 2008 Election Activities and Beyond

WASHINGTON, DC--APIAVote today announces the hiring of field, communications, and operations staff that signal a new period of growth and increased activity for the APIAVote's election field and communications program. Vida Benavides, Executive Director, welcomes Kathleen Tapacio-Flores, Joie Chen, and Naomi T. Tacuyan to the team.

Kathleen Tapacio-Flores will join APIAVote as its National Campaign Director, Joie Chen as Senior Communications Advisor, and Naomi T. Tacuyan as Deputy Director.

"While APIAVote has always been blessed with talented passionate staff and volunteers, with the filling of these important field and communications positions, we will have grown exponentially in capacity to do the training, outreach, and media relations work that it takes to effectively run a national program," said Eun Sook Lee, APIAVote's co-chair. "I look forward to working together with this team to improving APIAVote's organizational infrastructure, and in continuing to fulfill APIAVote's mission of increasing civic participation among AAPI communities. APIAVote wants to ensure that AAPIs are at the voting booth on November 4 and in elections to come," said Noe Kalipi, Lee's co-chair.

The experience and talent of this organization, coupled with the partnerships that have been cultivated over the years with local and national community groups will ensure that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders' voices will be heard at the ballot boxes," said former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, the chair of APIAVote's Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute (NYMLI). NYMLI ensures the comprehensive training of community leaders in incorporating effective voter mobilization into their organization's mission and programming.

APIAVote Toolkits for Community Organizers & Student Organizers Now Available!

Download Toolkit

WASHINGTON, D.C.-APIAVote's toolkits for voter mobilization will be available for download next week at www.apiavote.org. APIAVote encourages college students and community organizers to use the toolkits as their one-stop resource for planning and implementing a voter mobilization campaign to increase Asian American and Pacific Islander voter turnout in the November elections.

"APIAVote firmly believes in supporting our training by making resources such as our toolkit widely available to AAPI communities and campuses. Our toolkits are essentially a comprehensive step by step guide to conducting a nonpartisan GOTV campaign," says Alvina Yeh, APIAVote's program coordinator who supervised the development of the toolkits this summer. "The toolkits are an extension of our Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute (NYMLI), in which community leaders learn to incorporate voter mobilization into their existing infrastructure and programming," said Yeh.

Please remember to visit www.apiavote.org next week if you would like a student organizer version of the toolkit, and do pass this valuable resource around to your networks.
