One Nevada coalition encourages the almost 80,000 eligible Asian Americans & Pacific Islander voters to register by October 4th.
LAS VEGAS, NV-- One Nevada Coalition members are encouraging all unregistered AAPI voters to register to vote by October 4th, as the Nevada registration deadlines approach. Eligible Nevadans must register by October 4 or October 14.
“Raising the number of informed AAPI voters is absolutely crucial in this election cycle,” said Gloria Caoile, APIAVote board member. "Raising the number of informed AAPI voters is absolutely crucial in this election cycle," said Gloria Caoile, APIAVote board member. "AAPI voters can make a significant impact and demonstrate our increasing political participation. When we show up to vote, we can hold elected officials accountable to paying attention to the many issues that our AAPI communities face, including the current housing crisis, the economy, access to health care, and the affordability of higher education,” said Caoile. “If we do not vote, our issues will not be heard. It is up to each and every one of us to participate in the electoral process.”
“We want to make sure that all eligible AAPI voters are aware of the very important state deadlines that are coming up,” said Rozita Lee, APALA-Nevada chapter president. “One Nevada has been very active and visible with volunteers registering voters at grocery stores, community events, and cultural festivals, and we want to make sure that our voices count on November 4. We will continue to reach out to voters after the registration deadline to make sure they get to the polls, but our priority this week is to continue registering AAPI voters,” said Lee.
One Nevada, a nonpartisan organization in partnership with APALA-Nevada and APIAVote, is mobilizing AAPIs to register by October 4, and to vote on November 4 by phonebanking, canvassing, and outreaching to both unregistered voters & already registered voters. To volunteer, please contact Byron Yuzon at 702.513.0211.
The AAPI population is the fastest growing group in Nevada, experiencing a 40% growth rate between 2000 and 2004, and naturalizing to become citizens at an even higher rate-- 50%. Eligible AAPI voters comprise 6% of Nevada's voting age population, or about 80,000 (both registered and unregistered) voters. In a state with about 1 million registered voters and where the presidential race is neck and neck, the AAPI vote could swing the state to either presidential candidate.
