Des Moines residents have an exciting opportunity to elect the first Asian woman to the Des Moines City Council. Cyndi Chen, the Administrator of Commission on the Status of Iowans of Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage (CAPI), a group that culminated as a result of her consistent work with community leaders, is running for the at-large seat vacated by Des Moines City Councilman Michael Kiernan. Being a native of Taiwan, Cyndi has made Des Moines her home. Cyndi first came to the US in 1985 as a visiting scholar to teach Chinese Language at Buena Visa College (now University) in Storm Lake, Iowa.
