WASHINGTON, DC, September 22, 2014 – Asian Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote) today announced a record number of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) serving organizations will participate in National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), with activities leading up to, during and after September 23.
The AAPI Islander populations are among the fastest growing racial groups in the United States, and the same is also true for their voting-eligible population.
In the last four midterm election years, the number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders registered voters has increased by an average of about 600,000 over the prior cycle, resulting in an increase from about 1.4 million AAPI registered voters in 1994 to 3.9 million in 2010. The increased voter participation was a result in part of a concerted effort of APIAVote and its partners and affiliates across the country to educate and register new voters.
“As we gear up for the 2014 midterm elections, we want to highlight our ongoing voter outreach efforts and increase our numbers and influence at the polls, especially on issues relating to the economy, healthcare and national security, “ said Christine Chen, Executive Director of APIAVote.
This year, 317 AAPI serving organizations will participate in NVRD, up from 154 organizations who participated in 2012. This rate of increase compares to 65% growth rate overall in the number of organizations involved in the NVRD effort (from 1,223 t0 2,014 total).
